employment may actually be doing employers a favor-in the
form of cold, hard cash.
Statistics compiled by Workaholics4hire.com
indicate hiring off-site employees is financially beneficial
to companies. Using data compiled by the Occupational Outlook
Handbook and the U.S. Department of Labor, Workaholics4hire.com
estimates annual savings of more than $10,000 for Data Processors,
and savings of nearly $30,000 for Technical Writers. These
numbers are based on employers not paying for benefits, payroll
taxes, paid leave, equipment and supplies, or office space
for their off-site employees.
According to an article in the San Francisco
Chronicle, "Employers stand to benefit from the switch
to long-distance offices. Prices of portable personal technology
will have plummeted even as the cost of office space has skyrocketed,
and it will be much cheaper to set up as a worker/consultant
at home than on site. Corporations will go global: With proximity
no longer an issue and video conferencing the norm, workers
can be scattered across continents."
Since remote workers perform most of their work
outside of the office, they are able to have smaller or shared
workstations at the company's primary office. Companies will
also gain flexibility in choosing the location of their central
office, possibly allowing them to locate in a less expensive
area.
An article published by KLR Consulting Inc.
confirms that the savings can be quite substantial. "Consider
an organization of 200 employees with 10% of the employees
working as mobile workers and 10% teleworking. The organization
currently uses 40,000 square feet to accommodate its employees
(200 workstations). [By sharing workstations] the organization
could reduce its space by at least 4,600 square feet. At approximately
$25 per square foot for annual operating costs this minor
change saves $115,000 annually."
