Responsibilities of the Online Librarian:
Synopsis of Role:
As part of a new breed of information professionals, our Online Librarians work on a team that is redefining library and archival practices within the revolutionary atmosphere of an online university. Online Librarians thus cooperate in the provision of around-the-clock electronic reference to an international body of students, faculty, and staff. Each is expected to take the lead for one or more database, e-book program, or tutorial service. Most importantly, the staff member is expected to specialize in Web-based (including multi-media) collection development. Each librarian works with fellow librarians in concert with department chairs and faculty. Their goal is the delivery of appropriate research resources and, especially, electronic course materials in support of specific classes. These positions are part-time and call for telecommuting.
Essential Functions of the Online Librarian:
* General reference service to University faculty, students and staff.
* Advanced collection and electronic classroom development with an emphasis on Web resources.
* Ability to work collaboratively with department chairs and faculty in the development of course materials.
* Subject expertise in one or more of the Universitys educational programs.
* Technical specialization in one or more of the librarys database, e-book, or student tutorial programs.
Requirements for the Online Librarian:
Critical Skills:
* Professional library/archival skills with an emphasis on electronic formats.
* Ability to interact with students and faculty in a professional and timely manner through electronic media.
* Mastery of online searching in keeping with the products licensed by the Online Library.
* Facility with current online searching methods and a Web-based environment.
* Working knowledge of educational resources on the Deep and Open Web.
* Proactive, yet diplomatic support of the universitys programs.
* Self-starting team player who requires minimum supervision.
Preferred Education and Experience:
* Masters degree in Library and Information Science required.
* Academic or special library experience and advanced degrees in one or more of the Universitys program areas are highly desired.
* Preference given for prior work in online information services, including cataloging, collection development, and electronic reference.
* Familiarity with office automation packages and knowledge of Web software is desirable.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
* Professional library work that has few physical demands, but does presuppose weekend duty and flexible time schedules.
* Intended for telecommuting, but desk space is available at the Charles Town facilities.
* Computer is supplied, but requires a working telephone and access to the Internet that is sufficient for the campus teaching platform and Online Library site.
